Sergi Delgado
Sergi Delgado is a young but established art director, illustrator, graphic designer, and typographer based in Barcelona. He is an influential typographer and designer due to his unique and experimental designs that manage to blend typography with Optical Art, surrealism and mathematical algorithms that can be found in nature. Utilizing this interesting approach to designing, he is able to create mesmerizing, almost hypnotic typographic pieces of work that use an effect called the Moire effect, which, by definition, is the mechanical interference of light by superimposed networks of lines. Through this, a pattern is formed. By using repetitive or similar patterns that overlap each other with a slight offset creates a unique pattern or design that starts to form.
Delgado's works rely on this effect while also wrapping, bending, and rotating letterforms to enhance the illusions and create the perception of movement in his designs. It challenges how viewers perceive the text by blurring the line between art and design. Aside from this, his work is more than just aesthetic, but as mentioned before, mathematical. Using geometric shapes and principles, you can see how he draws inspiration from Pop art and Optical Art of the past with very clean, but bold designs and colour contrasts, but he blends this mathematical perfectionism with inspiration from psychedelic, dreamlike and surrealist movements, to create a new blend that pushes boundaries.
